GC Rieber met Ulf Johansen, one of Morescope’s founders, at a conference in Trondheim in 2022. "We liked that their approach was rooted in scientific methods as a spin-off from SINTEF. At the same time we were impressed by their vision of a highly automated and flexible solution that would work in an operational setting for a large Enterprise like ours," says Elin Thorsen Kløverød, Innovation and Sustainability Manager in GC Rieber.
Unveiling an organization's carbon footprint is, at its core, a data challenge. What data sources do you have, and how accurate are they? Morescope addresses this by providing an initial overview of emissions leveraging the company’s existing accounting data. This is especially helpful for quantifying Scope 3 emissions,a category that has been particularly cumbersome for companies to estimate and leading to significant gaps in reported emissions. This foundation then allows companies to refine their footprint estimates in the platform by integrating more precise activity data from internal operations, suppliers, or partners - a process known as the hybrid method.
Automation and precision combined
Truls Wingsternes, Head of Development, Innovation, and Sustainability at GC Rieber Minerals, explains,"We approached Morescope with an idea to get even more value from our existing data. We have detailed information about our purchases in our internal accounting system. Morescope worked out a solution to extract this data to automatically replace spend estimates with more precise emission figures, down to the level of the product purchased. This automation gives us a more accurate carbon footprint calculation, without increasing the manual load."
By improving their carbon footprint calculation with specific activity data at the product level, GC Rieber Minerals is now able to showcase the sustainable choices they make in purchasing and transportation in their operations. And it’s all backed by data.

The collaboration between GC Rieber and Morescope exemplifies the power of partnership in driving sustainability initiatives. By leveraging technology and data, GC Rieber is not only meeting regulatory requirements but also setting a benchmark for industry practices.
“We are excited to now offer this extended functionality to all our clients and help them quantify their footprint with higher accuracy and less manual work,” says Sophie Bruusgaard Jewett, CEO of Morescope.
